Taoyuan, Taiwan

Since 2000

Taoyuan City is the center of politics, culture and business of Taoyuan County. It is the gate of the R.O.C. and has many advantageous geographical features.

During the years of the Chienlung Emperor in the Ching Dynasty, a number of people from Fujian, a coastal province of mainland China, began to emigrate to the area that is now Taoyuan to develop and farm the land. They planted orchards of peach trees which, when in the full bloom of spring, were so beautiful the people named the place in honor of the beauty. They called the place 'Taotsaiyaun' which in Chinese means 'Peach Garden.'

In 1888, The Ching Dynasty resurveyed the land, and registered the area as 'Taoyuan' in cadastral book.

During the Japanese occupation, the Taoyuan became a region, replacing the Taoyuan department and the earlier Taotsaiyuan Department.

When the Japanese relinquished Taiwan to the R.O.C. government the Hsinchu County was divided into three smaller county areas: Hsinchchu County, Miaoli County and Taoyuan County. Taoyuan Town was designated The Capital of Taoyuan County.

On April 21st, 1971, Taoyuan Town was reformed to the present Taoyuan City. Comparable to Irvine in many spheres, Taoyuan is a model City with boundless potential for the high tech future.
